Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving communities of costuming that exist, such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. Over the years, the cosplay community has evolved into a creative outlet for many fans to establish and showcase some impressive feats of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics at conventions. In honor of the caped crusaders of the convention scene, ComicsAlliance has created Best Cosplay Ever (This Week), an ongoing collection of some of the most impeccable, creative, and clever costumes that we’ve discovered and assembled into a super-showcase of pure fan-devoted talent.

Tutorial: Lois Lane Inspired Look

To celebrate the opening weekend of Man of Steel out in theaters, what’s more fitting than doing a tutorial on the leading lady, Lois Lane? After doing a little investigating myself and studying movie stills, Lois’ makeup is super simple. After all, this is the Daily Planet’s star reporter - I can’t imagine the first thing she thinks of in the morning is how to paint her face. She uses a soft neutral palette that compliments her eyes, but is so easy that it takes minutes to apply.

Apply an eye primer. Take a neutral cream and pat it in the inner corners, sweeping it towards the middle of the lid.
Use a medium matte grey-purple to blend into the cream color from the middle of the eye to the outer corner. Apply on crease & lower lash line as well.
With a darker purple, apply on outer V and crease. You may also use this color to line the upper lash line for more dimension and definition.
Add cream shade as brow highlight.
Apply your favorite mascara, a peachy pink blush and a pale pink gloss & you’re set! Now go out there and break a scandal!

Smell Like The Man With Stan Lee Signature Cologne

One can only imagine the mixture of ingredients that went into Stan Lee’s new Signature Cologne. I’d suspect it includes hints of mustache, sunglasses, bombast, alliteration and a sprinkling of emotional strain with Jack Kirby. The 90-year-old Lee teamed with scentmaker JADS International, the same company that made last year’s series of Avengers colognes, to develop a fresh scent that actually includes “bergamot, ginger, white pepper, basil and violet, and features layers of cedar, vetiver and musk accords.”

Lee’s Pow! Entertainment took the fragrance to Wizard World Philadelphia and asked cosplayers to offer their opinions. Check out the video on ComicsAlliance!

Doodled this out last night. I wanted to make her look a little more futuristic and make it a little more formal (in the story it was a present for Supergirl to wear at a party, I think). Also, I’ve never been a fan of people in the Superfamily wearing masks; a hood feels friendlier to me. Almost changed the yellow to silver but I decided against it. Hope you guys like it!

The cloak coordinated with the red legwear and red gloves creates a better blue:red ratio, and gives the look a more balanced feel. Also, I’m a big fan of capes redesigned as mod hooded mini-cloaks, so yeah.

Bandai Celebrates ‘Sailor Moon’ 20th Anniversary With Henshin-Inspired Cosmetics

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon, Bandai’s cosmetics line Creer Beaute announced the release of cosmetics inspired by Usagi Tsukino (aka Serena, if you grew up with the dubbed series). Creer Beaute’s Miracle Romance Shining Moon Powder appears to be both a blush and an illuminating powder, and is encased in a compact that closely resembles Sailor Moon’s Crystal Star Transformation Brooch. The compact also doubles as a necklace for those of you who want to channel your inner magical girl without having to sacrifice $100+ on vintage Sailor Moon toys on eBay. The compact is currently available for pre-order for¥3980 (approximately $41) on Bandai, and will ship in Fall 2013.

Creer Beaute has released previous cosmetics collaborations with various anime series, including Urusei Yatsura, Creamy Mami, and The Rose of Versailles.

Here’s another infographic I did for HalloweenCostumes.com, this time illustrating the history of the emblem on Superman’s chest.

Until I researched this, I had no idea just how many variations the shield went through in its first five years, before they settled on the classic design that went mostly unchanged for over five decades.

My previous infographic (illustrating the evolution of Iron Man’s armor) can be seen here.

Somebody on Twitter was bitching about how they wished the Man of Steel chest emblem was more “historic” or something and I wanted to be like, “Son, which historic chest emblem do you mean?”
