COMICS ALLIANCE ROUNDTABLE: GAL GADOT’S WONDER WOMAN COSTUME FOR ‘BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE’

By Betty Felon

One of the most discussed news items from last month’s Comic-Con International was the first look at Wonder Woman as she will appear in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the new DC Entertainment film by Zack Snyder. Played by Gal Gadot, this will be the first cinematic appearance of William Moulton Marston’s Amazonian princess and feminist icon in her nearly 75-year history, and naturally fans have had a lot to say about the portrait debuted in San Diego. In reaction to the image, members of the ComicsAlliance staff assembled to discuss and critique Gadot’s costume, depictions of super-women on film, and the current state of superheroine fashion in general.

Today’s participants include CA’s superheroic sartorialist Betty Felon; clinical psychologist and Arkham Sessions co-host Dr. Andrea Letamendi; comic book editor Janelle Asselin; journalist Juliet Kahn; comics writer/artist Kate Leth; and blogger/vlogger Angelina L.B. aka ALB, who makes her CA debut in this in-depth analysis. Join us for our roundtable discussion on Wonder Woman’s newest live-action steez, high heels, and the balance between practicality/realism and style in superheroine costume design.

For now, here’s a photo of me and my gang at SDCC ♡ I’m wearing Lazy Oaf’s Comic Onomatopoeia Dress and AK’s wearing a Ming Doyle x Adam WarRock dress :)

An appreciation post for some of my favourite ladies of tumblr: Katie, Noelle, Aimee, Megan, Betty and Angelina. A party I wish I existed!

Some notes: Katie always draws herself with blue hair, so I followed suit. Noelle would drink that much coffee. I love how Aimee draws leg hair on everyone and I like to imagine that she’s constantly tanned. Megan likes wine. I haven’t seen Betty or Angelina draw themselves, so I had to take some artistic liberties.

Inspiration!

The lovely Kate Leth dedicated this ridiculously adorable illustration to her favorite ladies of Tumblr :) I love how she incorporated everyone’s unique illustrative styles into this (as well as my favorite color combo in my outfit), plus check out how Angelina & I are marveling over the other’s outfits. My heart keeps swelling every time I look at this ♡

Although I’ve only been following Kate for less than a year, I always look forward to seeing her posts on my dashboard. She’s just this funny, talented, gorgeous lady who has this incredible knack at creating these anecdotal comics that are both compelling and cute. I’ve featured a couple of her super-cute superhero redesigns previously, but I highly recommend following her and checking out her wonderful art/LIFE. She’s truly inspiring ♡

Black Cat Inspired Look” by ALB

Red and Blue here are meant to represent Spiderman, because I will go down with this ship.

Lids are first filled with Kryolan’s Aquacolor in White, applied with a damp brush. Mac’s Gesso Pressed Powder is then applied over lids, eyebrow bone, and inner corner of eye. Mac’s Espresso is then used to create a raised crease, and is then blended out before darkened slightly using Tarina Tarantino’s Butterfly Black.

Using a wet angled brush apply Sugarpill’s Afterparty Pressed Eyeshadow underneath bottom lashes to create an arched line pointing upwards. Apply NYC Liquid Liner in a dramatic cat eye arch, and mascara is then applied to top lashes using Rimmel Sexy Curves. Let lashes dry and curl them, applying false lashes of your choice, a spikier and less “natural” style is preferred.

Lips are lined with Clinique Lip Liner in Redy or Not and filled with Mac Lipstick in Russian Red.

Previous Comic Book Looks: Red Robin, Emma Frost, Pixie, Catman, Psylocke

I love the incorporation of red and blue in this Black Cat look. Gorgeous work as always, Angelina!

Red Robin Inspired Look” by ALB

Lids are first primed with Urban Decay Primer Potion. Sugarpill’s Love+ is applied to lid and underneath eye. MAC’s Family Crest Pigment is then applied generously to crease, blending both together to create a smokey eye effect. MAC’s Solar White is applied to inner corner and is used as a brow highlight. Sugarpill’s Goldilux is lightly dusted all over lid, getting more opaque as it nears the inner corner. MAC Crystallized Yellow Glitter is then applied to the inner corner and blended out.

Apply NYC liquid liner, and mascara is then applied to bottom and top lashes using Rimmel Sexy Curves. Let lashes dry and curl them, applying false lashes of your choice.

Lip Gloss is Soap & Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker.
