Manicure Monday: Betty & Veronica nail art, by nailsbyran
‘The Art of Betty and Veronica’ Takes a Historical View of Comics’ Frenemy Fashionistas
It’s an age old question… or, at least, a 70-year-old question:Betty or Veronica? The two female points of the love triangle at the very center of publisher Archie Comics have always formed a sort of either/or dichotomy for those male readers envious of Archie Andrews’ predicament, being seemingly forced to choose between two ideal girlfriends of opposite natures. When those male readers ask themselves, or one another, “Betty or Veronica?” they’re asking about what type of girl they prefer: the debutante or the girl next door? The cunning, sophisticated, fickle, wealthy heiress for whom everything comes easy, or the big-hearted, book-smart, loyal, hard-working young woman? Sugar or spice? Good girl or bad girl? Or perhaps they’re just asking, more simply — blonde or brunette?
There’s a somewhat startling 1978 Betty and Veronica story by Dan DeCarlo, the cartoonist who more than any other was responsible for defining the characters’ appearances and personalities, which attempted to make the point that there really is no choice at all: Betty and Veronica aren’t two different girls as much as they are two halves of the same girl. The story, entitled “Split Personality,” is one of the seven tales editors Victor Gorelick and Craig Yoe chose for The Art of Betty and Veronica, a new hardcover book celebrating the high school dream girls and the men whose designs and lines made them, to some, the idyllic girlfriends decade after decade.
MAC Cosmetics’ Unveils Betty & Veronica Collection Based on the Archie Icons
MAC Cosmetics will be launching their Archie Comics collection just in time for Valentine’s Day, featuring makeup products inspired by Riverdale’s own Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. Known for their critically acclaimed beauty products and collaborations with pop culture icons (including Hello Kitty, Barbie, and Wonder Woman), MAC Cosmetics’ Archie Comics products will feature exclusive new shades and special edition accessories. However, the most unique feature of this collection is that the products are evenly split (like Archie’s heart) to suit either the Girl-Next-Door (sweet candy shades of pink and peach) or the Sophisticated Fashionista (deep vixen tones of red and purple).

Archie’s GoodWoodNYC Jewelry Too Cool For (Riverdale High) School [link]
Brooklyn-based designer GoodWoodNYC pulls inspiration from the coolest kids in Riverdale in their latest collaboration with Archie Comics. Known for incorporating a unique style of engraved woodwork in all of their products, GoodWoodNYC further immortalizes the classic iconography of Archie and the gang in the form a modern collection of jewelry, accessories, and home decor.
The highlights of the collection include a chic pendant of Jughead’s signature crown, a Comic Strip bracelet featuring tiny engraved wooden portraits of the Riverdale crew, and a pin set that includes both Betty and Veronica (for those of us who are just as indecisive as Archie himself).

The Archies, by Cliff Chiang
“I was curious what a high school garage band like The Archies might look like today, so here’s my hipster take on the band. Archie is totally straight-edge!”
- Cliff Chiang
This past weekend at New York Comic Con, I couldn’t stop gushing over how much I loved this print to Cliff [which was sold out by the time I tracked him down in Artist Alley]. I love Ronnie’s “princess” necklace and Betty’s entire ensemble, but my most favorite point of fashion here? Archie’s bandage armband.
Also, Jughead’s wristbands are totally the same ones that my boyfriend wears. As well as Scott Pilgrim.
