Marvel and Benefit Cosmetics’ ‘SpyGal’ Sports Gorgeous Phil Noto Artwork [link]

Benefit Cosmetics is combining forces with Marvel Comics to launch a comic book inspired by Benefit’s beauty products, entitled SpyGal. Marvel assembled the team of acclaimed writer James Asmus (Uncanny X-Men, Captain America) and masterful artist Phil Noto (Batgirl, X-23) to bring SpyGal to life in this beautiful limited edition release, which will be available on Benefit Cosmetics makeup counters everywhere this month.

Obviously we’re big Phil Noto fans around here, so Marvel was kind enough to hook us up with some high resolution versions of the SpyGal promo material that was distributed last week. Check out more shots of the SpyGal comic on ComicsAlliance!

ComicsAlliance Demos Converse’s Customizable DC Comics Sneakers [link]

As the latest installment in the DC Comics x Converse collection, Converse launched today its Design Your Own DC Comics Chuck Taylor All Star shoes campaign, featuring mix-and-match custom shoe design options that include Batman, The Joker, Catwoman, and The Riddler. This exclusive feature allows the customer to design their own shoe by offering a selection of customizable parameters, including the color/print of the canvas, emblems, rubber soles, lining, and even a personalized heel strip.

Converse offered me the opportunity to demo the entire Design Your Own DC Comics Chuck Taylor All Stars process early, and I tweaked every single design parameter to utter purrfection. Check out my review of the product and process and the un-boxing photos of my combative kicks on ComicsAlliance!

Velvet Batman dress, by All That Jazz [circa 1992]
[currently on sale at Lynn’s Rags]

Despite the fact that this dress is approximately 20 years old, it features some of this year’s hottest (or rather, recycled) trends: velvet, bodycon, mesh cutouts, and The Dark Knight. This dress was originally part of the All That Jazz x Batman Returns retail collection that was released in conjunction with the film in 1992.

Conclusively, Batman never goes out of style.

Romance Was Born Designs Marvel-ous Looks For Australian Fashion Week [link]

The whimsical Australian designer duo, Romance Was Born, kicked off Australian Fashion Week with a super-heroic collection for Spring/Summer 2013, sponsored by no other than Marvel Comics. With a collection that includes a tangible incarnation of Jack Kirby’s famous Kirby Krackle (comprised of textured beads and baubles) floating on a cosmic purple and charcoal ensemble, the Romance Was Born x Marvel Comics collaboration is truly a walking work of art.

Straying away from the blatant iconography and overuse of superhero emblems, Romance Was Born raised the bar for the fusion of fashion and comics, utilizing a mix of both comic and couture techniques to create high fashion looks inspired by Jack Kirby and the creators of Marvel Comics. These 25 looks feature anatomical trompe-l’œil prints, textured embellishments, halftone patterns, and colorful motifs of Marvel’s finest making cameo appearances throughout the collection.

Although the fashion may be a bit audacious for everyday wear, these looks provide a great style guide in how to add a touch of comic-inspired glamor into your wardrobe, from jewel-toned color coordination to structured silhouettes to bold prints.

OPI x The Amazing Spider-Man nail polish collaboration

Nail polish shades:

  • Your Web or Mine? - The perfect pink for sticky situations.
  • Into the Night - This perfect midnight blue was made for prowling.
  • Call Me Gwen-ever - Girlfriend, be sure to pick up when this urgent coral calls.
  • Just Spotted the Lizard - Be seen in this reptilian yellow-green.
  • My Boyfriend Scales Walls - Climb new heights with this cityscape white.
  • Number One Nemesis - Show your metal in this sparkling nickel.

Man, even Spidey would be groaning at those cheesy names. But regardless of the awful puns and the somewhat questionable color selection, Just Spotted the Lizard actually looks quite divine. Now, if only OPI could’ve created a white shatter polish that resembled webbing…

Chuck Taylor DC Comics - Batmobile (Kids 1-3 yr), $37, Converse
Although the current DC Comics x Converse catalog is pretty sweet, none of the designs have really made me rush out to purchase a pair of kicks; partially because I seldom wear sneakers, and primarily because when I do, I already own a pair of vintage Batman x Converse hi-tops. That said, it appears that I’ve finally encountered the only exception: if these Batmobile Chucks were available in adult sizes, I would stock up on a few backup pairs and wear them EVERY FUCKING DAY.
Get on it, Converse.

For Christmas, the Boyfriend Wonder gave me Gotham City.

As someone who never expects (let alone asks for) jewelry from others, I’m completely floored that he obtained my favorite piece from the DC Comics x nOir Jewelry collection. Thank you so much, Andrew - I’m forever in awe of you

The detail that went into this piece of jewelry is simply stunning. I had never noticed this within the press photos of the collection, but there’s a tiny Bat-symbol atop one of the buildings! Furthermore, I love how the skyscrapers and the Cubic Zirconia windows are just ever-so-slightly askew in placement, giving this ring some grit and an air of vertigo upon closer inspection.

Simply put, Gotham City is the jewel of my collection. All I have to do now is keep her protected from riddling rogues, cat-burglars, and the like…
