Best Cosplay Ever (This Week) - 12.12.11
Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving community of costuming that exists today and cosplay communities such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. In honor of the many fans who’ve displayed excellence in the mastery of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics, ComicsAlliance has created Best Cosplay Ever (This Week), a weekly collection of some of the most impeccable, creative, and clever costumes that we’ve discovered and assembled into our own super-showcase of pure fan-devoted talent.

I like drawing mod superheroes. I really like redesigning costumes! I really really like Batwoman.

Somehow this slipped under my radar, but Kate created this amazing mod redesign of Kate Kane/Batwoman a couple weeks ago. The muted turquoise accents both complement and refresh the dominance of black and red in this outfit, without overwhelming Kate Kane’s signature Bat-look. I love how the Bat-symbol is incorporated into this dress, which is a bit reminiscent of the Bat-shirt in Annie Wu’s punk redesign of the JLA.
And since I already own red Bat-earrangs, I think that I’m destined to make this dress, to own and wear forever.
Be sure to check out Kate’s mod redesign of Power Girl! :)

Batwoman swimsuit, designed by GillyPerkyGoth.
The high neckline of red fishnet/mesh material and the high cut bottoms make this swimsuit a more modern, fashionable alternative to the Batgirl swimsuit design.

Sartorialist Meets Superhero: I’ve got Kate Kane on my mind, apparently, because I was browsing the Sartorialist the other day and came across this outfit. My first thought was something along the lines of, “great shoes, but who could pull those off —”
I’m thinking I’ll do a series of these, so stay tuned!
This one’s for my bro, chiroptophobia, for reminding me of being sixteen and falling in love with superheroes.

So Yasmin created a series of superhero redesigns appropriately titled Sartorialist Meets Superhero, and I’m absolutely in love. Since I already paid homage to the Batwoman of Earth-2 earlier today, I figured that I’d share one of my favorite redesigns of the modern Batwoman, Kate Kane.
I love how the ratio of red to black in Batwoman’s current costume is also applied to this outfit, allowing just enough red accents to pop against the black. Kate’s fire-red bob looks impeccable with the cloche hat and suit, creating an overall chic look and a sleek silhouette. The spectator oxfords are simply the shoes of my dreams: not only are they red, but they feature a clever reinterpretation of the scalloped Bat-detailing (usually seen on the top of Batwoman’s red boots) on the tips of the shoes.
The only thing that would make those shoes absolutely perfect, would be the inclusion of Bat-soles:

-Flakes has been creating some wonderful Secret Six and other DC character inspired fashion looks.  (You should check them our they’re awesome!)  Last night while in a hypnotic trance from hours of re-building my website I decided to have a tinker with Looklet myself.
I bring you Batgirl (Stephanie Brown), Supergirl, Batwoman (Kate Kane), Powergirl, Black Canary and Zatanna.  (I couldn’t resist giving Peej a boob window and I think it looks awesome.)  I love fashion and I love comics and I hope when I become a full-time comic penciller that I can use some of that to make my characters interesting.  You guys have seen me rant about this before I’m sick of reading comics and every character, even the women are wearing the same plain coloured shirt and generic pants combo.  There is so much variety artists would be playing around with!  People use their clothes as extension of themselves, it’s there way of showing off who they are using fabric and accessories.  By taking the time on a character’s outfit even out of costume in a comic you’re helping show who they see themselves as without words.
I can see Looklet becoming a fun and useful resource for myself in the future when I need to be inspired.

I haven’t played around with this yet, but this already looks more fun than Polyvore. I’d love to see any of your superhero/-villain inspired Looklet sets, so feel free to send them over - I’d love to compile my favorites into a post by the end of the week :)

Kate Kane - character sheet, by J.H. Williams III
I love the notes on her taste in music and how it reflects her updated/current look in terms of civilian wear, especially since I often find myself wondering what my favorite heroes/villains listen to in their spare time purely based on their personalities. Her hair, makeup and attire are impeccable, though I would’ve gone with only one of the two tattoos [preferably the swallow over the nautical star, but that may just be The Long Blondes fan in me kicking in]. And of course, I love the tiny white bow detail on the back of her halter top.
On a side note, Kate’s cute bob totes reminds me of Chynna Clugston.
